Selexyz - Scheltema, Amsterdam

Scheltema Bookshop AmsterdamA five storeys 1,100-square-meter Selexyz - Scheltema bookshop is probably one of the biggest in Europe. It is located in a short walking distance from the Flower Market (Bloemenmarkt) and the shopping centre Kalvertoren. It holds constantly in stock about 38,000 titles, and receives sometimes more than 1,000 new books per day, a large part of it in English. Previously mainly science and educational bookshop, today it is expanding trying to attract wider public. It displays books dedicated to various disciplines on 800 shelving sections. It also has a good international magazines section on the ground floor. Its large department of remaindered books, so called in Dutch Ramsj, sells at much lower prices interesting leftovers mainly from England and the US.

Selexyz – Scheltema is a part of the largest Dutch bookshop network Boekhandels Groep Nederland – BNG, which is one of the first companies in the world to introduce an electronic RFID tagging of each book in their 42 bookshops all over the country. The RFID tagging makes it possible to locate a copy of the given book in the whole chain of shops.

Bookshop Scheltema AmsterdamThe shop organizes lectures, signing of the books by known writers and festive introductions of the new publications. Check their website for the schedule. On the modest wall space of the shop’s staircase, interesting photography exhibitions take place. Quiet and full of light café on the first floor, serves good espresso with cake or a sandwich – not a bad place to have a moment of rest, during your visit in the busy Amsterdam centre.
