Bimhuis in Amsterdam

Did you know that Amsterdam has one of Europe’s most prominent jazz scenes? Jazz has always been popular in Amsterdam. Many of the great names have lived from time to time in the city, including Chet Baker, who died here.

The centre spot for the Dutch jazz scene is the world famous Bimhuis, created in the 70s by renowned Dutch jazz musicians. Great names in Jazz have played the Bimhuis over the years: Charles Mingus, Chet Baker, Archie Shepp and more contemporary Bob Berg, Steve Solo and Kenny Wheeler to mention a few.

Last year the City of Amsterdam decided to move the Bimhuis out of its classic location in Amsterdam historic quarters and into a brand new place in the Muziekgebouw complex, just behind the Central Station. The new Bimhuis is a state of the art music venue, with cutting edge technical and acoustical solutions for a perfect sound. The concert hall has the features of an amphitheater, seating a bit more than 200 persons.

In the Bimhuis agenda you will find a mixture of world famous names, up-and-coming talents and experimental projects. All sorts of jazz can be heard here, and influences from all corners of the world create new rhythms and exciting sounds. Tuesday nights are jam session nights and, perhaps needless to say, the quality of the musicians on stage is impressive.

Apart from jazz music, the Bimhuis complex hosts a pretty good restaurant, late night bar mingle and a large sun terrace by the water. Best time of the year to visit? The world's largest jazz festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, takes place in Rotterdam every year in July, and throughout that month many international greats in jazz take the opportunity to enter the stage in Amsterdam’s Bimhuis too.
