Restaurant Golden Temple in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a busy city and it is smart to make a restaurant reservation in advance. You can do so through our main Amsterdam restaurants page.

Restaurant Golden Temple Amsterdam A restaurant in a trendy but modest Utrechtsestraat in Amsterdam seems like moved here from the past. Indian music mixed with American guitar ballads of the 1970-ties, simple interior and very tasty vegetarian food on the menu. No alcohol (not even beer) but all sorts of tea, juices, own mixes of herbs with ginger, fruit extracts. Home made cakes as desert.

The tradition

Named after The Golden Temple in Amritsar in Punjab, India, the symbol of Peace and Harmony and one of the seven wonders of India, comparable only to Taj Mahal, this small and simple restaurant continues the tradition of the 1960-ties and 1970-ties of the hippy movement, Flower Power, peace and enlightenment. Participants of these movements are turning 60 by now, but their favorite food – vegetarian, influenced by the Sikh kitchen of India, is remains very refreshing and tasty.

The Food

The owner (Michael) looking himself like a grown-up hippy of the 1960-ties runs the show. The cooks – an Indian and a Sikh are working at the back of the establishment. All is strictly vegetarian, fresh, inspired by an Indian kitchen, but interpreted again in an innovative way.

Soup of the day with a piece of warm pita bread is always delicious. Indian Theli plates (with delicious Pakora) served on several stainless steel plates offer a delightful, refreshing choice. Italian pizza and the meals of the Middle –East complete the menu.

The service

Restaurant Golden Temple Amsterdam Friendly service will help you through the maze of the Indian kitchen meals, if you are not familiar with its exotic names. Young waitresses, often American students, are discreet and unobtrusive.

The feel

The atmosphere is informal, the service friendly, the prices moderate. Amritsar means Pool of Nectar with the deeper meaning of Immortality. We are not in the position to promise you as much, but Peace and Harmony are guaranteed. One of the best vegetarian eateries in town.
