Point Break: Films with a View – NDSM Wharf, 5 August
The original bromance movie, Point Break comes to the open-air movie screenings of NDSM this month. For the uninitiated, Point Break tells the truly believable story of an FBI agent infiltrating a gang of bank robbing surfer dudes; it is pretty much the 90s in film form. The screening will take place in the open air, if weather permits, or else inside the Noorderlicht café. As part of NDSM’s summer programming, the screening is sponsored by Jameson; with 2 for 1 drink deals available at the bar. The show starts around 21:00, and a spot can be secured by emailing film@pllek.nl.

European Championship Sand Sculpture Festival – Zandvoort aan Zee, 2-8 August
This month, the little seaside town of Zandvoort aan Zee, reachable with just a short train ride from Amsterdam Centraal, plays host to a spectacular display of sculpting talent. A group of eight artists from around Europe will descend on the beach to create their masterpieces from sand, based on the theme ‘music and dance’. A winner will be announced at the end of the process on 8 August and all sculptures will remain on display until the end of October. So grab your beach towel and sunglasses and head out to Zandvoort aan Zee. Just be sure not to kick these sand castles over!

In All Their Glory – Royal Palace Dam Square, 21 June – 31 August
A rare event, this exhibition opens up the War Council Chambers on the 3rd floor of the Royal Palace to the public for the first time in 200 years. In the 18th Century, when the Palace was still merely Amsterdam’s town hall, the civic guard were housed in these rooms and the walls were lined with paintings of the regiments; of which Rembrandt’s Night Watch is the most famous. This month, however, we get a chance to see the many other examples of civic guard paintings, displayed in their historical home. The exhibition is open daily between 11:00 and 17:00, with tickets costing EUR 10.

World Rowing Championship – Bosbaan, 24-31 August
This year, the World Rowing Championship comes to Amsterdam. Held in the Bosbaan rowing lake in Amsterdamse Bos, the oldest artificial rowing course in the world will play host to more than a thousand athletes from the four corners of the globe. As well as cheering from the shore, visitors will be able to enjoy live music, drinks and organic food, as well browsing stalls of rowing materials, sports gear and souvenirs. To reach the event from Amsterdam Centraal, simply hop on bus 170, 172 or 174 and follow the signs.

Musical Bike Tour – Various Locations, 31 August
An event so quirky it could only take place in Amsterdam, the Musical Bike Tour aims to take its audience on a bike ride to three different locations, to enjoy concerts by three different groups. The attending audience is split into three groups, with each group spending half an hour listening to a performance and then hopping on their bikes, scooters, roller skates, unicycles or any other form of transport to join their group in a journey to the next event. Tickets can be purchased through the events website and start at EUR 17.50 if you book early.
