What's On Amsterdam - September 2014

Amsterdam City Swim – Amsterdam Canals, 7 September

Think you’ve seen just about every way people can cover themselves in freezing water in the name of motor neurone disease? Think again. This is no ice bucket challenge, this is roughly 1,000 people throwing themselves into the cold September waters of Amsterdam’s canals for a charity swim in aid of what Americans refer to as ALS. Starting at the Marine Establishment close to the Maritime Museum, and making their way down the Ij to Keizersgracht, the swim covers two kilometres and each swimmer raises a minimum of EUR 300. Don’t worry, you don’t have to take part to enjoy the spectacle. Simply keep an eye on the canals around noon, when the swim begins.

Cesar Milan Live – Heineken Music Hall, 20 September

The Netherlands loves Cesar Milan, much like the rest of the world. The Dog Whisperer brings his new show, Leader of the Pack, to Amsterdam’s Heineken Music Hall towards the end of this month. The show is aimed at dog owners, unsurprisingly enough, and offers to share Cesar’s tips about body language, control and leadership in keeping your dog’s behaviour in check. The show is entirely seated, and with tickets ranging from EUR 42.90 to EUR 104.50, it is not for the light of wallet. Everything is in English and Cesar comes on stage at 19:30. Tickets can be bought online via the venue’s website.

For the second time, Amsterdam waterways are to witness a collection of futuristic vessels powered by the sun as the Solar Boat Parade returns to the city. As well as a parade of the boats through the historic canals of Amsterdam, visitors get to explore the latest developments in sustainable technology through the event’s Square of the Future space, while the Green Circuit allows those with an interest to see for themselves what it is like to pilot a solar powered boat. The event runs from 13:00 to 18:00 in the western part of the city and entrance is free.

The Davis Cup – Ziggo Dome, 12-14 September

The World Cup of Tennis, more officially known as the Davis Cup, comes to Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome this month as the Netherlands takes on Croatia. For fans of either side, or just lovers of good tennis, the Ziggo Dome is happy to swap rockstars for rackets. Taking place on a specially transplanted gravel court, the match is spread over three days and will determine who gets to go through to a guaranteed spot in the Davis World Cup Group. Ticket start at EUR 45 and can be purchased through the Ziggo Dome website.
