The UvA was founded as the Athenaeum Illustre in 1632 and in the nineteenth century expanded into a comprehensive research university which currently has over 22,000 students and 4,500 staff. The UvA has 7 faculties, each having research institutes they either collaborate with or which form part of the faculties themselves. The faculties are presented here with their contact details:

1.) Faculty of Humanities
Consists of six departments: History, Dutch studies, Philosophy and Art, Archaeology and Area Studies, Language and Literature, Media Studies, Religion and Cultural Sciences.

2.) Faculty of Law
The Law faculty conducts international cooperation with many other Law schools and programmes at prestigious institutes around the world, mainly at postgraduate level. The Law department has three Bachelor’s programmes and eight Master’s (LL.M.) programmes as well as five research institutes.
