Dappermarkt, Amsterdam

Art market AmsterdamA marketplace, which in 2007 has been judged the Best Market of the Netherlands. It is located along one street – Dapperstraat, in East Amsterdam (Amsterdam Oost). This low cost area of the city attracts many newcomers - people from Suriname, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. The Dappermarkt being the local market reflects its public – energetic, hard working, exotic.

The Dappermarkt is a place for very inexpensive shopping, with most of products for just €1,-. It has 250 stands with 160 merchants. It is surrounded by cafés on both sides of the street and interesting shops with general goods, clothes, shoes, but also exotic food: Turkish bakery Hilal, Sera – an Islamite butcher, Suriname food store Tropicamax, selling also African cosmetics – just to name a few.

At the end of 2007, Dappermarkt has been judged by the National Geographic Traveler as one of the Top 10 Shopping Streets in the World, just behind places of really world reputation as Grand Bazaar in Istanbul and Navigli Antique Market in Milan.

The feel
Art market AmsterdamLively, mostly crowded, good for buying low cost fruits and food products. Exotic cuisine on the market. If you came here for shopping, visit the shops around Dappermarkt – the market itself is more general goods place, on a very basic level. Check also their website for an extraordinary event on the market – there are days with live music and many special festive events as Ladies Day (each year on March 8), Christmas Gala etc.

As on any market in any country: beware of pickpockets.
