Amsterdam Tropen Hotel

NH Tropen Hotel AmsterdamIf you think about going to Amsterdam with the whole family by car, this is one of your possibilities. Amsterdam Tropen Hotel is squeezed between Tropenmuseum and Oosterpark – a big ethnographic museum, fantastic for children and an old local park, with a flat pool for small kids and a nice playground, just a step from the hotel.

Good communication with the city centre by a quiet and punctual tram line 10, again a block away from the hotel and a taxi park just in front of it. There are also some other tram and bus lines to all parts of the city. A suggestion is to leave your car in the hotel car park (24h for € 17; a really good deal for Amsterdam), and to take a tram (10 minutes) or even walk (25 minutes) to the Rijksmuseum and other Old Town attractions.

NH Tropen Hotel Amsterdam The hotel building is not much of architecture, just a high rise in the style of the 1960-ties, with an ugly courtyard and even uglier lobby with lifts to upper floors. The rooms are rather small, cheaply furnished, the same goes for bathrooms and WC’s, which are separate. The hotel is very clean, well maintained, even if it feels outmoded. And there are also incredible city views from the hotel’s windows, especially from its higher floors. If you stay in rooms on the park side, singing of birds will wake you up in the morning.

Children up to 11 are allowed to stay free in the room of their parents. The hotel has a baby cot (free), but an extra bed costs a whooping € 47,- plus 5% local tax. If you travel in a family of four choose for Superior Room with two twin beds, which at the hotel rates is excellent value for money. The hotel will arrange for a baby–sitter if necessary (surcharge).

NH Tropen Hotel Amsterdam There is no real restaurant, but a simple and good brasserie, serving tasty meals and a bar (expensive!), which remains always open. Watch out for the overpriced breakfast (€ 18,-). There are many cafés in the area and a McDonald restaurant just a block away, located directly at lively street market - Dappermarkt.

With its low room rates, Amsterdam Tropen Hotel offers perhaps not much fun, but certainly very good value for money. You may find plenty of attractions in the hotel’s area and further out in the city. And as a bonus you have a free wifi.
