The picturesque and historic Nieuwmarkt square is a bustling centre for tourism in the heart of Amsterdam's old city centre. The square is just east of the Red Light District but removed from the seediness and noise of this area, while still being close enough to walk into Dam Square from. Because of this, Nieuwmarkt is a great location to look for Amsterdam hotels that may suit your visit.
Hotels nearby Nieuwmarkt
There are a number of luxury hotels throughout the city, with the best hotels in Amsterdam often being quite close to the city centre. Around Dam Square and the Jordaan, there are many luxury Amsterdam hotels, but if you wish to stay around Nieuwmarkt in style, the selection is rather more limited.
Not that it is limited to anything bad, as the Grand Hotel Amrath, Nieuwmarkt's only nearby 5 star hotel is a great example of the art of luxury in accommodation. This large, impressive building can be found dominating the quay just to the northeast of the square at Prins Hendrikkade 108 and its Art Deco design makes it especially hard to miss. Inside, clean white stone and wrought iron continues the feel of moving back in time to the roaring twenties, while the high level of service and facilities mean it deserves its reputation as one of the top Amsterdam hotels.
Many hotels in Amsterdam may not offer the full 5 star treatment, but still give visitors a little something unique. These boutique hotels tend to be somewhat in the middle pricewise and offer decent service and facilities. Misc Eatdrinksleep is an unusually named little hotel with a lot of character found very close to Nieuwmarkt at Kloveniersburgwal 20. With only six rooms, this is not a hotel for big groups, but for a couple or individual it could be just what you're looking for. Each room has a unique design, from retro to African, and the hotel facilities are comprehensive, although it does not include an elevator up the steep Dutch stairs.
There a number of other independent Amsterdam boutique hotels found close to Nieumarkt, each one offering a unique experience different from the big chains. Hotel Royal Taste can be found in the heart of the Red Light District, a short walk from Nieuwmarkt at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 47 and offers retro, seventies style rooms with rather basic facilities. Near to this, Hotel 83 at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 83 is a family run business with comprehensive service offerings, including their own hairdresser and parking service.
The hotel Heart of Amsterdam is unusual among Amsterdam hotels, lying somewhere between a budget and a boutique hotel. It can be found close to Nieuwmarkt in the Red Light District at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 118. The prices are in line with budget offerings, but the design of the hotel is quite unique. Here, each room is themed after a different movie, and so you and your friends may find yourselves staying in the Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction or even Priscilla Queen of the Desert rooms. Facilities are basic and similar to other cheap Amsterdam hotels, but the central location and themed rooms makes this one worth a visit.
Nieuwmarkt's location close to the Red Light District means that there are many other budget Amsterdam hotels and hostels nearby. Shelter City Christian Hostel at Barndestesteeg 21 offers very low cost accommodation for young people visiting the city. Rooms are basic but clean and the hostel is accustomed to dealing with large groups. Hotel The Globe at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 3 also has basic rooms, but its location over the hotel's popular sports bar makes this one more for groups of guys looking to party.
