Heart of Amsterdam Hostel
The Heart of Amsterdam is a rather unusual hostel located, as the name suggests, in the heart of the city centre, at the very edge of the Red Light District. There are two factors that make this Amsterdam hostel so unique. First is that it lies somewhere between a genuine hostel and a hostel, with rooms able to hold a couple of people or an entire group and very reasonable prices. The second unique factor is its movie theme. The rooms in Heart of Amsterdam are not numbered, but rather each one is represented by a famous movie. Depending on your tastes, you can stay in the Pulp Fiction room, the Apocalypse Now room or even Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
This Amsterdam hostel and hostel really lives up to its title and it can be found right in the middle of Amsterdam's old city centre, walking distance from Dam Square, the Red Light District, Nieuwmarkt and Waterlooplein. To find it from Dam Square, simply follow the busy Damstraat past all its restaurants and souvenir shops until you pass the large Golden Chopsticks Chinese restaurant. The Heart of Amsterdam is on the next left turn and can be found just past the Hash, Marijuana and Hemp Museum.

The hostel offers a fairly standard continental breakfast in the mornings for those travellers able to wake up in time, from 8am to 10am. Late risers need not worry, however, as the surrounding area is packed with places to eat. Northeast of the hostel, past the ladies in the windows, is Amsterdam's Chinatown and here you can find any number of great Indonesian, Chinese or Thai restaurants. Meanwhile, Damstraat and the Dam Square area are packed with Argentinean steakhouses, fast food outlets, bakeries and brown cafés that offer a great choice of meals.
The hostel's 24 rooms are basic and clean as can be expected for an Amsterdam hostel at the same price range. The interiors are nicely decorated, with the clean black colours found in the lobby continued and, of course, every room bears a mural or two related to the movie it represents. Rooms vary in size, with some able to accommodate medium sized groups, and all come with in-room safes, TV and phone as standard. Other facilities such as hair dryers and ironing boards are available on request.
Heart of Amsterdam's services are quite standard, but more than is offered by many Red Light District hotels. Luggage storage, Internet access, tour advice and a fax machine are all available at the 24 hour reception. The staff are friendly and able to speak a number of languages, so communication should not be a problem. Major credit cards are accepted and special requests such as extra folding beds added to a room can be granted, although often for an additional fee.
