Reason for another church in Amsterdam
At the beginning on 17th century, as the city was rapidly growing, the need for another church was being felt. The Jordaan district that was recently added and was home to many lower working class people. These people were welcomed by the Noorderkerk, while the already standing Westerkerk (also in Jordaan) was a place of worship mainly for the middle and higher economic classes.
Design language
Because of the influences of Protestantism in religion and Reneissance in phylosophy and art, the Noorderkerk has more modern design. It's layout is symmetrical and cross shaped.
Restoration
Around the turn of the millenium, the church building, the small tower and the organ were restored. Facilitation of cultural activities was one of the reasons why the reconstruction was able to happen. Because it was financed mainly by the municipality.
Concerts in the church
The church is thanks to its good acoustics regularly used for music concerts. Mainly classical and every Saturday afternoon from 14:00 to 15:00.

The standard sermons happen on Sunday at 10:00 and at 18:30.
Van Gogh & Rembrandt
The Noorderkerk is a venue for the visual show about these two painters. All the walls of the church are covered by visual projections and an audio commentary is played from speakers. The show lasts for 40 minutes.

Noordermarkt
Every Saturday and Monday there is a market on the plaza right in front of the church. The main articles for sale are fresh produce.
